Oral Surgery Warsaw

a happy couple relaxes on the couch

If you are in need of dental implants or wisdom teeth extraction, oral surgery performed by Dr. Bill Stofer at our Warsaw practice can help you. While many practices must refer these treatments to outside specialists, we can address a wide range of complex dental needs all in one location, overseeing your case from beginning to end. We also perform biopsies to test for oral cancer and other conditions. Contact us today to learn more.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are located in the furthest back posterior position of the dental arches. Most patients develop four wisdom teeth (two each on the upper and lower arches), but some patients develop fewer, or even none at all. Some wisdom teeth erupt cleanly from the gums if they have enough room and are properly aligned with the adjacent molars. However, wisdom teeth often erupt at odd angles, or cannot fully erupt because of spacing issues or other complications. These are called impacted wisdom teeth, and they can cause a multitude of very serious and painful oral health issues.

The best time to have wisdom teeth removed is during a patient's late teenage years or early 20s, when root formation is still incomplete. These immature wisdom teeth are smaller, and the jawbone is less dense, so surgery is less complicated and potentially less painful. If your wisdom teeth have not started to erupt, we will use x-ray imaging to locate and evaluate them.

If you are a candidate for extraction, you may choose to receive nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, or IV sedation during your oral surgery. These sedation dentistry treatments can help you fully relax during treatment.

Other Tooth Extractions

In addition to wisdom tooth extractions, we perform general extractions in the anterior and posterior regions of the mouth. In most cases, a problem tooth can be pulled in just a few minutes, but some situations are more complex. We are equipped to address both simple and complicated extractions. As with wisdom tooth extraction, several forms of sedation are available in addition to a local anesthesia.

Dental Implant Placement

Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically placed within the jawbone to replace missing tooth roots. They support a variety of restorations, including dental crowns, bridges, and dentures. Before dental implants are placed, it may be necessary to supplement the jaw with a bone graft.

Once dental implants are placed, patients will usually need to wait three to six months for their jaw to heal and fuse with the implant. During this time, patients wear temporary dentures designed to allow the gums to heal. After they are fully healed, we can place custom-designed permanent restorations.

Soft Tissue Biopsy

If a patient has abnormal lesions in the mouth, a soft-tissue biopsy may be necessary. A biopsy is the surgical removal of a piece of tissue for further testing. A soft tissue biopsy can detect oral pre-cancer and cancer in its early stages, when it is most effectively treated.
