Tips to Reduce Invisalign® Discomfort

More and more people have undergone Invisalign® instead of traditional orthodontic treatment with braces. Invisalign® uses clear aligner trays for orthodontic treatment instead of brackets and wires, meaning greater comfort and treatment that is hardly noticeable. Teens and adults in the Warsaw, IN area have been extremely satisfied with the results of treatment.

While effective, some patients have wondered about discomfort associated with Invisalign® treatment. Dr. William B. Stofer and his team would like to go over these matters in a bit more detail below. We can discuss Invisalign® candidacy and other topics in more detail during your consultation at Dental Solutions.

Is Invisalign® Uncomfortable?

Invisalign® can be uncomfortable since the aligner trays exert pressure on the teeth top promote realignment. This can leave the teeth feeling sore and a little tender for a few days. Since patients swap out Invisalign® every two weeks, there may be a recurring cycle of discomfort as a new aligner is worn.

Rest assured that even though there may be some soreness, the overall discomfort is quite tolerable, and there are many things that you can do to reduce any pain you may be experiencing.

Wear Your Invisalign® Aligners as Much as Possible

If you wear your Invisalign® aligners as much as possible, you’ll get acclimated to the discomfort sooner and it will pass. Be sure to have your Invisalign® on at all times except for when you eat, drink, or clean your teeth.

Put New Aligners on at Night Before Bed

You may not realize it, but you can sleep your way through the initial discomfort. We recommend that patients put in new Invisalign® aligners before bed. Overnight, you’ll be able to withstand the initial hours of discomfort without being conscious of it.

Soft Foods for the First Few Days

Biting and chewing can lead to tooth sensitivity and tenderness in the first days with a new Invisalign® aligner. We recommend eating soft foods in those first days. Stay away from crunchy, crispy, chewy, and tough foods until your teeth aren’t so sore.

Consider Cold Compresses

If the discomfort is especially bad, applying a cold compress to your mouth and cheeks can help. Be sure to leave the compress on for 20 minutes and then take the compress off for 20 minutes. Repeat the pattern as needed for relief.

Ice Is Nice

If the cold compress isn’t enough, you can take out your Invisalign® aligner and put an ice cube in your mouth. Don’t do this for too long, and be sure not to chew on the ice cube. If anything, this is good for soothing sore teeth and gums.

Use Over-the-Counter Pain Medications If Needed

While not always necessary, some patients may consider using over-the-counter pain medications for their sore teeth. This is only needed for the first say or so. Ideally, try other pain relief methods before turning to pain relievers if possible.

The Soreness Will Be Worth It in the End

While the soreness from Invisalign® can be inconvenient, rest assured that it will be well worth it in the end. You will have straight teeth, a better looking smile, and experience improved dental health and wellness.
