What is a Root Canal?
Your teeth contain several layers: the protective outer enamel, the sensitive dentin contained within the enamel, and the inner pulp, which consists of nerves and blood vessels. The root is the portion of the tooth that lies below the gumline. The root canal, or center of the tooth root, contains pulp that facilitates blood flow to the different areas of the tooth. The blood supplies essential nutrients and removes toxins, which keeps the tooth alive.
A deep cavity, traumatic injury, or tooth fracture can make the tooth pulp susceptible to bacterial infection. Bacteria can kill the pulp and result in the loss of the tooth, as well as other complications. If you see a dentist in the earliest stages of advanced infection, the outer tooth structure can be saved with root canal therapy, eliminating the need for tooth extraction.
Root Canal Therapy
The three-step root canal procedure consists of removing infected pulp from within the tooth, filling it with a biologically-inert substance, then sealing it to prevent further infection. Often, a dental crown is placed upon the natural tooth, which protects it from further damage while restoring its function. Dental Solutions offers convenient same-day crowns milled by our in-office Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC®) machine. CEREC® creates custom-matched restorations in about an hour, so patients can leave with a fully restored tooth on the same day.
We can complete root canal therapy and crown placement for many candidates in a single visit. With today's advanced technology, treatment is performed with maximum precision and efficiency. Most patients report little to no pain, and require only local numbing gel during treatment. Oral sedation and IV sedation are available for anxious or especially sensitive patients.
Some patients may experience soreness or slight tissue inflammation following root canal therapy, but these are easily controlled with over-the-counter medication. Follow-up care includes regular dental cleanings and checkups, along with thorough oral hygiene at home. If your tooth has become discolored by root decay or trauma, we offer internal bleaching.
If you are experiencing dental pain, we can help you achieve comfort, oral health, and a beautiful-looking smile. Please contact Dental Solutions immediately if you are experiencing toothaches. We can provide you with fast, efficient treatment and pain relief so you can continue with your daily life.
